I got the idea for this very simple pocket from my pattern for my ebook reader cover. It's a great pocket for small, thin items like an iPod, pens, pencils, a nail file or a magazine.
The pocket is made of the purple and grey fabric on the right side. |
Straight Pocket A
Figure out the size of pocket you want. For
cutting the fabric, double the height of the pocket, and add a ½” seam
allowance to both the height and width of the pocket. Cutout the fabric.
Fold the fabric piece in half, top to
bottom, right sides together. Sew the sides together with a ¼” seam allowance.
Turn pocket right side out through the
opening on the bottom. Press along fold and seams. If desired, add
topstitching or bias tape to top now.
Attach the pocket by the bottom to where
you want it to end up, with the pocket upside down. Sew along bottom with ¼”
seam.
Fold Pocket up along bottom seam, pin in
place and press bottom seam, keeping raw bottom edge from showing out of the
sides.
Topstitch along sides and bottom, fully
attaching the pocket to your work. Reinforce the top of the sides if desired.
Straight Pocket B
Figure out the size of pocket you want. For
cutting the fabric, add a ½” seam allowance to both the height and width of the
pocket. Cutout the fabric.
Fold in the ¼” seam allowances on all sides
and press. If you are using bias tape, attach the bias tape to the top edge and
sew. If not using bias tape, sew down the top ¼” seam allowance.
Attach the pocket by to where you want it
to end up and pin in place. You could also attach it just by the bottom at
first, and then fold the pocket up and topstitch the sides and bottom.
Topstitch along sides and bottom, attaching
the pocket to your work. Reinforce the top of the sides if desired.
